History of the Institute
1999 – Foundation of IMS
The IMS – Institute for Membrane and Shell Technologies was founded in Bobingen, near Augsburg, Germany, by Dr.-Ing. Robert Off and Prof. Alexander Furche. From the very beginning, the institute focused on advancing research, education, and practical applications in membrane and shell construction technologies.
2005 – Partnership with Anhalt University
Dr. Robert Off began his professorship in Real Estate at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. This collaboration laid the foundation for a close partnership between IMS and the university and made his vision of an international master’s program in Membrane Structures a reality.
March 2006 – Launch of Master Program
The world’s first master’s program in Membrane Structures started at the Bauhaus Campus of Anhalt University in Dessau-Rosslau, Germany, with 21 students from across the globe. Since then, more than 300 students from over 64 nations have graduated from this unique program.
September 2018 – Renaming of the Institute
The institute was officially renamed IMS Bauhaus® Archineer® Institutes e.V., reflecting its expanded mission and growing international focus.
Present – Ongoing Research and Education
Alongside educating architects and engineers, IMS actively participates in research and construction projects in textile, tensile, and cushion structures, as well as lightweight membranes and architectural fabrics, continuing to drive innovation and expertise in the field worldwide.
